Description

William Blake Bowen was born on 14 July 1900 in Longbush, Southland, New Zealand, living with his father, John Thomas Bowen in Marakopa, King Country, New Zealand. Enlisting at Auckland on 14 Dec 1914, aged just 14, Bowen disembarked at Gallipoli on 17 Apr 1915 and was still just 15 years old when wounded to the back and left shoulder at Chanuk Bair and invalided to the New Zealand General Hospital at Cairo. Returning to active service on 24 Mar 1916, Bowen was wounded on a second occassion on 23 June 1917 and invalided on a Hospital Ship to Hornchurch. Bowen served again during WWII with the Auckland Infantry, this time giving his real date of birth. He transferred to the 17 New Zealand Transport Company when reacquainting himself with Cairo hospitals after fracturing both tibia and fibia at Bab-el-Hadid.
