Description

George Smith was born on 23 Mar 1894 and lived at 18 Tynehurst Street, Burmantofts, Leeds, working as an Engineer's Labourer. Enlisting with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 3 Sep 1914, Smith transferred to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 8 Sep 1914, joining Hawke Battalion as an Ordinary Seaman. Captured 'after operations at Antwerp' and 'officially reported as Prisoner of War at Doberitz 5 Dec 1914.' He was not repatriated to Leith until 2 Jan 1919 and deischarged on 2 Apr 1919 with an extension of leave granted indefinitely.
