*** RESERVED *** 1914-15 Star to Bosn. T.B. Ireland, R.N.
Description

Thomas Berry Ireland was born in St Mary's Isles of Scilly on 20 May 1885, the son of Thomas Berry and Eliza Ann Ireland of Ilfracombe, Devon. First serving as a Boy aboard H.M.S. Forte during the Boer War, Ireland served from 1903 to 1914 on a variety of different ships, being promoted to rank of Acting Boatswain on 9 Sep 1914. Serving aboard H.M.S. Monmouth from 2 Aug 1914, Ireland and crew were part of 5th Cruiser Squadron sent to the Central Atlantic to search for German commerce raiders and protect Allied shipping. She was detached upon arrival to patrol the Brazilian coast for German ships, and was later ordered to the South Atlantic to join Rear Admiral Christopher Cradock's squadron in their search for the German East Asia Squadron. Cradock found the German squadron on 1 Nove 1914 off the coast of Chile. The German squadron outnumbered Cradock's force and were individually more powerful; the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau sunk the Monmouth and the Good Hope at the Battle of Coronel. Monmouth was lost with all her 678 crew. Thomas Berry Ireland is remembered at Plymouth Naval Memorial.
