Description

Francis Mathews first served as a Lance Corporal and Sergeant with the 11th Mule Corps under Captain H.E. Price during the Tibet campaign and was stationed at Bareilly, Delhi. On the outbreak of WWI, Mathews served briefly with the Leicestershire Regiment with numberd 8154 and part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 16 May 1915, then serving as a Motor Transporter in the Indian Telegraph Department, with a regimental number of 458. Mathews transferred to the 3rd Infantry Brigade, North West Frontier from 19 Aug to 29 Oct 1915 and joined the 8th Infantry Brigade Transport Company and then the Supply & Transport Corps as a Sub-Conductor ffrom 10 June 1916 to 30 May 1918, completing service with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 16 June 1918 - 23 May 1921. Mathews was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Gazetted in the New Year's Honours 1.1.1919.
