Description

Tom Holmes Burt was born in Oct 1870 and was at Sculcoats, Hull, Yorkshire and baptised at Dairycoates Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Hull, Yorkshire, The 1911 Census has Tom Holmes Burt aged 40 and as head of the Burt family at 61 Princes Rd., Hull and working as a hairdresser, married to Maria Elizabeth Burt, with daughter, Florence Emma Burt, aged 14, and son, Sydney Oswald Burt, aged 13, listed as being at school. Enlisting with the 13th Battalion (4th Hull Pals), East Yorkshire Regiment on 26 Nov 1914, Tom Holmes Burt disembarked at Egypt on 30 Dec 1915, aged 45, suffering wounding from shell shock with neuralgia on 9 Apr 1916 and being transferred to the Hospital Ship Calais on 14 Apr, being discharged as no longer physically fit for service on 19 Jan 1917. His son, Sydney Oswald Burt, was born in Barton, Yorkshire in 1898 and enlisted with the 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment on 2 Mar 1914, aged 16, disembarking in France on 27 June 1915 and discharged on 26 Mar 1919 due to sickness.
