Description

Edward John Bawtree was born in 14 Apr 1848 in Upper Canada, Eastern Ontario, moving to Abberton, Essex and listed as a pupil at the Royal academy, Alverstoke, Hampshire in 1861. Enrolling on 11 Mar 1862, Bawtree first served as a Midshipman aboard H.M.S. Curacoa before serving aboard H.H.S. Dryad during General Sir Robert Napier's expedition to Abyssinia and promoted to the rank of Acting Sub Lieutenant on 21 Dec 1868 and full Lieutenant on 1 Feb 1874, serving aboard a number of different ships including H.M.S. Jumna for the Egypt campaign. Latterly, he was Divisional Coastguard Officer at Fraserburg, Aberdeenshire. He was found dead in his dining room at 12:30 on 13 June 1890 with a 'rifle bullet wound to the head and was so far as known to be suicide.'
