Description

Peter Riley is recorded on the roll as being entitled to the Azoff clasp as Ordinary Seaman aboard H.M.S. Miranda. In the autumn of 1854 a squadron of three British warships led by Miranda left the Baltic for the White Sea. After shelling and destroying Kola, an attempt to storm Arkhangelsk was unsuccessful. On 3 June 1855 at the Siege of Tarangog, Boatswain Henry Cooper and Lieutenant Cecil William Buckley of Miranda crept ashore and set fire to government buildings. For this action the pair were awarded the Victoria Cross. Miranda's Captain, Edmund Moubray Lyons had already reported on 29 May 1855, after just a few days of the squadron entering the Sea of Azov, that the enemy had lost four steamers and 246 merchant vessels. Miranda was decomissioned on 21 Apr 1857.
