Description

Award of the M.M. Gazetted 24 Jan 1946: 'William Arthur Simpkiss 185 Inf. Bde., 1st Bn. Royal Norfolk Regt.' "This NCO has been a section comd. since 12 Oct 44 and previously to that a member of the Int. Sec. since Aug 44. Whilst in the Int. Sec. he frequently occupied Obsevation Posts which were difficult to reach and went on many hazardous patrols, always fulfilling the task set no matter how difficult or dangerous. As a section comd. he has shown a courage almost fanatical, and considering he is intellectually far above the average and highly sensitive, this courage is all the more praiseworthy. At LINGEN in Apr 45 this NCO personally cleared block of flats, killing three of the enemy and capturing the remainder, whilst his sec took up covering positions. Again at BRINKUM he was faced with the task of clearing fanatical enemy out of a house. Slightly wounded from blast he killed one German and captured seven, aided by one man only. This NCO's courage is known is known throughout the Bn. He has shown a complete disregard for himself, by example he has proved himself a worthy leader and his conscientious loyalty is beyond praise. In his rank he has done more for the Bn. than any other NCO."
