Description

Francis Mason was born on 26 Dec 1906 in Crake Hall, Bedale, Yorkshire and worked as a Labourer until enlisting on 29 Oct 1925 with the Royal Artillery. Posted to Northern France on 6 Dec 1939 with the Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, Mason was awarded the Military Medal, Gazetted 20 Sep 1945: "In recognition of allant and distinguished services in the defence of Calais in 1940." Mason was taken P.O.W. on 26 May 1940 and held at Stalag 344 at Lamsdorf from 14 June 1940 to 5 Mar 1945. Post-war, he was promoted to Warrant Offficer on 20 May 1948 and became a Yeoman Warder of H.M. Tower of London on 30 Dec 1971.
