Description

Military Cross Gazetted 31 Dec 1942: "At ALAMEIN on 27 Oct 1942, Captain Wilson, R.E. took charge of his Coy. when his Coy. Comd. was killed. During the day he was given the task of clearing a lane through a mine swamp for a distance of about 1500 yards. The swamp was under direct observation of enemy O.P.s who continued to harass the mine lifting parties by arty. fire during the whole operation. Captain Wilson was blown up when in his Bantam car early during the proceedings and although badly shaken, continued to conduct the mine lifting operations with the utmost coolness. A number of his men were killed or wounded from shell fire and it is to the great credit of Captain Wilson that a lane was cleared up to the time for the passage of the tanks. His coolness and total disregard of personal danger was a fine example to all ranks present." Edward Leslie Wood was born in Leytonstone, Essex on 27 Feb 1903 and attested with the Royal Engineers on 15 Feb 1921, commissioned on 19 Jan 1940. After the award of his M.C. for gallantry at El Alamein in 1942, Wilson was made Temporary Captain on 30 July 1945 and further Mentioned In Despatches on 13 Sep 1945, finally made Major on 1 Oct 1946 before serving in Malaya.
