** NEW ** 420 Squadron Halifax D.F.C. Group to a Navigator who flew 34 sorties and whose crew claimed a Me210 over Kiel on 15 Sep 1944. Consisting of: Distinguished Flying Cross George VI with reverse dated 1945; 1939-45 Star; France & Germany Star; Canadian WWII Defence Medal; Canadian WWII War Medal; Canadian Volunteer Sevice Medal with clasp. Accompanied by R.C.A.F. Aircrew Flying Log Book covering complete service from 25 May 1943 to 14 June 1945, R.C.A.F. Sight Log Book, R.A.F. Notebook, R.A.F. Identity Book, R.C.A.F. Service & Pay Book, Navigator's Brevet, 420 Squadron cloth patch, R.C.A.F. cap badge, sterling silver Canadian General Service badge numbered 492174, 1939 M.R.C. enamel badge, R.C.A.F. buttons and a host of original wartime certificates, letter and paperwork, including R.C.A.F. Certificate, Department of National Defence letter and Navigator's notes.

Description

D.F.C. Gazetted 16 Jan 1945: "Flying Officer Downey, as Navigator in Flying Officer Gallen's crew, has displayed throughout his tour exceptional qualities of leadership and coolness in action. His ability as Navigator is unquestionable and although his sorties included some of the enemy's most heavily-defended areas, Flying Officer Downey, with complete disregard of any opposition, guided his aircraft directly to the target. The success of this crew on their operational tour wsa due in no small measure to the cooperation, coolness and devotion to duty of this officer." Wilfred Downey was born in Toronto, Canada in Aug 1915 and was educated at Weston Collegiate and Vocational School, Ontario. Joining the R.C.A.F. in June 1942, Downey trained in Canada at No.4 A.O.S., London, Ontario and was posted to the UK at the end of 1943. Promoted to Pilot Officer, Downey served at No.24 O.T.U. and No. 1664 Conversion Unit and then posted for operational flying with 420 (Snowy Owl) Squadron, R.C.A.F., completing 34 operational sorties.
