Description

M.M. Gazetted 11 Nov 1916. Percy Harrod was born in Halstead, Essex in Sep 1889 and served as a Pioneer Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, entering France on 22 Aug 1914. The 1st Battalion took part in the Battle of Le Cateau, The Marne, Aisne and Messines and were part of the so-called 'Christmas Truce' of 1914. Harrod's M.M. was awarded at the time of the Battalion's advance from the front line tranches east of Lesboefs on 9 Sep 1916, establishing a new defensive line 'Antelope Trench' and repulsing a strong German counter-attack. On 23 Oct 1916, the Battalion was halted by machine gun fire from Dewdrop Trench, though some men were able to enter Boritska Trench and engage in hand-to-hand-fighting before the Warwickshires and Essex Regiment soldiers were forced to withdraw.
