Description

Arthur Stephen Springate was born in Chatham on 12 Mar 1887, the son of Stephen and Mary Jane Springate of 20 Wyles Road, Maidstone Road, Chatham. He enlisted with the 8th Battalion Leicester Regiment on 2 Sep 1914 and entered France on 29 July 1915, awareded the Military Medal for distinguished service in the field in September 1916 during the battle of the Somme, Gazetted 6 Jan 1917. Returning to England on 21 Jan 1917 for a short period of training at Bushey Camp, he was Gazetted 2nd Lieut., Leicestershire Regiment (T.F.) in June 1917. Returning to France, Springate was killed in action at Bullcourt on 25 Mar 1918, during the German Spring Offensive and is commemorated at Arras Memorial.
