Description

Charles William Lucas was born on 1 Aug 1893 and lived with his father, Charles Lucas, at St. Ronans, Summer Road, East Molesley, Surrey. Working as a Parcel Porter & Checker for Great Central at Marylebone Station, Lucas attested for the Royal Engineers Railway Troops, signed off by the Railway's General Manager on 12 Nov 1914 and embarking for France on 19 Nov 1914 with the Railway Transport Establishment. Promoted to Corporal on 20 Mar 1916 and Sergeant of the Transport Section, Railways Operating Division, Lucas was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in France 1917 (Gazetted 13 Mar 1918): "Awarded Military Medal for prompt and gallant action in arresting a fire which had broken out on an ammunition train."
