John Gorier Stephens was born on 19 Jan 1890 in Liskeard, Cornwall and worked as a Farm Labourer. Serving aboard HMS Adamant, Maidstone, Vulcan, Dolphin, Vivid and Maidstone H22, amongst other submarines, vessels and establishments, Stephens was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Gazetted 2 Nov 1917: "In recognition for services in submarines in enemy waters." He was further Mentioned In Despatches 29 Nov 1918.
