D.C.M. Gazetted 22 Jan 1916: "For conspicuous gallantry near Neuve Chapelle on 9th December, 1915, when he went out by himself by night to examine the German wire armed only with a revolver and some bombs. He was discovered by a German covering party, who called to him "Hands up." He threw a bomb at them and started to run, but fell into a hole. Being still pursued he threw another bomb and then opened fire with his revolver, which stopped the pursuit. Finally he was hit by a bullet in the foot, but crawled to our wire and was carried back into our trench."
