Description

William Buchanan Ritchie was born in 1877 and commissioned from the Militia into the Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire Regt.) on 25 Feb 1899, and promoted to Lieut. 26 May 1900 and Capt. 1 Dec 1904. As a Major in the 2nd Bn. in 1914, Ritchie 'went to France with the B.E.F. on the outbreak of war and took part in the retreat from Mons. He was Mentioned In Despatches and invested with the D.S.O. for a part he took in a rearguard action. In Oct 1914 he was invalided home but took command of and trained the 11th Bn. South Lancashire Regt. which he subsequently took to France in 1916 and took part in the Battle of The Somme. He remained in France on active service until 1917 when, once more he was invalided home. He returned to France in 1918 and remained there until the armistice. He then served for two years in Dublin as 2nd in command of the 1st Bn. and in 1921, commanded the 2nd Bn. D.S.O. Gazetted 18.2.1915 "For services in connection with operations in the field." M.I.D.s Gazetted 19.10.1914 & 4 Jan 1917.
