Description

C.B. Gazetted 25 Aug 1885, K.C.B. Gazetted 24 June 1904. M.I.D. Gazetted 25 Aug 1885. Deputy Surgeon-General James Howard Thornton was born on 7th January 1834, the son of Major James Thornton of the 78th Foot. He was educated at King's College London B.A. 1854; M.B. 1855, Lond. M.R.C.S. 1855. Assistant Surgeon 9 Jan 1856, he gained commission as a prize at King's College on nomination of Hon. W.H.L.Melville and made Surgeon 9 Jan 1868, Surgeon Major 1 July 1873 and Brigade Surgeon 1 Mar 1882 and finally Deputy Surgeon General on 30 June 1886, retiring on 13 Aug 1891. His service in the Indian Mutiny campaign included the actions of Benares, relief of Arrah, capture of Jagdespur; action of Surajpur, defence of Alambagh, and the final seige and capture of Lucknow. In the China War of 1860, he was present at the actions of Sinho, capture of Taku Forts, occupation of pekin. On the North East Frontier, he was at Khasia and Jainthia Hills, and in 1862-63, at the capture of several stockades and subsequently wounded. At Bhutan 1865-66, he was at the taking of Duranga pass, capture and recapture of Dewangiri. In Egypt, 1882, Sudan 1885 and Suakin, he was P.M.O. of Indian contingent, and on the N.W.Frontier, Hazara, 1888, as P.M.O. Desp. Thornton was also the author of Memories of Seven Campaigns, 1895, dying on the 6 Jan 1919 at Hove, aged 84.
