Description

D.C.M. Gazetted 3 Sep 1918: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when he rendered great assistance in organising and supervising the defence of the line, assisting Lewis gunners, and instructing N.C.O.s and men who had no previous knowledge of fighting. Later, he personally conducted an ammunition carrying party along the front-line under heavy fire and issued the rounds wanted." M.S.M. Gazetted 1 Jan 1918: "In recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field during the present war."

Arthur Robert Humphrey was born in Poplar, London and enlisted with the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers, serving over 18 months in South Africa. Transferring to the 21st (4th Public Schools) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, Humphrey was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major on 11 Sep 1914. Appointed Company Sergeant Major of the 26th (Bankers) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers and was posted to France, Italy and Belgium before the end of the war.
