Description

Charles Griffiths was born in Yatton, near Leominster, the son of Aaron and Sarah Griffths of Bircher Common, Yarpole, serving initially with "F" Company (Leominster) 1st Herefordeshire Rifle Volunteer Corps before enlisting with the King's Shropshire Light Infantry at Hereford on 6 Feb 1901, becoming a renowned army boxer in India and South Africa. Re-enlisting with the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) at Ludlow, Griffiths was Mentioned in Despatches from Sir John French dated 8 Oct 1914 for the Battle of the Aisne and Gazetted 19 Oct 1914. The award of his Medaille Militaire was posthumously dated 19 Nov 1914 on his certificate, as Griffiths was Killed in Action on 31 Oct 1914 and is commemorated at Ypres Menin Gate Memorial and on the Croft & Yarpole Memorial. Birmingham Daily Post 9 Nov 1914: "DECORATIONS FOR BRAVERY IN THE FIELD. A communique from the War Office states that the President of the French Republic has bestowed the decoration "Medaille Militaire" on the undermentioned WOs, NCOs of the Expeditionary Force, with approval of The King, in recognition of their gallantry during the operations between August 21 and 30 1914:- Lce. Cpl. C. Griffiths, 6th Dragoon Guards."
